    Haan Wilhelmus 2013

A case of Haan Wines can work more miracles than a church full of saints

    PHILOSOPHY

This wine is based on the old wine saying that "the blend is greater than any of its parts". Using five classic varieties (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot) adds even greater complexity and potential to age superbly. The style and overall character of the wine is of the highest order.

    WINEMAKING

Each variety is picked at its own distinct maturity so maximising the flavour. Individual French oak selection is tailored for each variety and matured as separate parcels. A detailed blending exercise is undertaken to bring about the desired complexity in the finished, blended wine.

    THE VINEYARD

The vineyard is located in the middle of the Barossa on deep, sandy loam over red friable clay. The crop level is maintained below 8 tonnes per hectare by a strict pruning regime,

    THE WINE

Being able to blend with five varieties this wine is contstantly an award wining wine. The aromas are a complex of leafy Cabernet characters blended with plumy fruits and black spices from the Malbec and Petit Verdot. The palate explodes with rich dark fruits and herbal flavours and persists throughout the mid palate where it gathers further weight from the smokey French oak and dusty tannins. The silky finish allows the fruit flavour to continue throughout the palate giving great persistence and length. A classic wine with immense structure and longevity. This wine is aged in selected French oak barriques for 24 months, which imparts a fine grain tannin structure and length. To fully appreciate this wine, we recommend that it be decanted 3 to 4 hours before serving.

    Haan Shiraz Prestige 2013

From a Haan wine what sudden friendship springs

    PHILOSOPHY

The Haan philosophy of providing the best possible conditions in both the vineyard and winery has produced yet another wine of distinction and excellence. Shiraz is the king of Barossa reds, and only grapes from the Hanenhof Vineyard have been used in the making of this traditional style.

    THE WINE

The powerful aromas of spice and berry like fuits combined with the dusty French oak and hints of vanilla produces a very seductive aroma with many layers of complexity. The well rounded and powerful mid palate shows the generosity of this wine, the blackberry fruits and spicy oak combine to give its richness and the firm tight tannin structure allows this wine to be classed as pure Barossa

    AGEING

Released with 24 months wood and bottle age, this wine will continue to improve over the next 5 to 10 years under good cellaring conditions. It will certainly reward those who are patient, but this classic style will also be enjoyed by those who cannot resist the immediate temptation. To fully appreciate this wine, we recommend that it be decanted 3 to 4 hours before serving.

    Haan Merlot Prestige 2013

Merlot Prestige should be drunk on the knees with the head bared

    PHILOSOPHY

The Haan philosophy was established right at the beginning with Hanenhof Vineyards being managed as a true wine estate. Providing the best possible conditions in both vineyard and winery has been the key to success to which must be added the clear understanding of wine excellence. As such then the Haan wines show distinct varietal character and classical style. Grapes used are only from our Hanenhof Vineyard. The maturation program is balanced with an understanding of the wine style whilst maximising the typicity and definitive potential of the fruit.

    VITICULTURE

The Merlot vines are 18 years old, grown on a sandy loam with a 2 metre clay base. The vines are trellised on a single wire with two foliage wires to keep the foliage upright and expose the fruit to the maximum amount of sunlight. The fruit was allowed to ripen to 15° baume before picking and cropped at a level of 3.5 tonnes per acre.

    WINEMAKING

This wine was fermented using a selected yeast to enhance fruit definition and depth. The skins were plunged and pumped over three times per day and the wine allowed to rest on skins for seven days to allow for maximum colour and flavour extraction. After malolactic fermentation the wine was racked into selected French oak barriques and allowed to mature for 24 months before bottling.

    TASTING NOTES

A very powerful wine in both aroma and palate structure. The aroma is characterized by black cherries and ripe plums, layered with aromas of spicy toasted oak, which gives great complexity. This complex aroma is carried over on the palate and further emphasized by the silky oak and fruit tannins. These deep tannins give the wine the length and persistence to be one of the best Merlots produced by Haan Wines since its creation in 1997. To fully appreciate this wine, we recommend that it be decanted 3 to 4 hours before serving.

    AGEING

While released with quite some readiness, there is no doubt that the Merlot Prestige will develop further with more bottle age. We expect it to show extremely well at around 8 to 10 years of age.

    HAAN CLASSIC SHIRAZ 2015

A meal without a Haan wine is like a day without sunshine

    PHILOSOPHY

This wine continues the philosophy of the Hanenhof vineyard of making fine table wines of distinctive varietal character and individual style.

    VITICULTURE

The fifty year old Semillon vines are grown in sand over deep clay, in the central Barossa floor. The vines are pruned to rod and spur with moving foliage wires to expose the fruit to maximum sunlight.

    WINEMAKING

These individual varieties were picked at 12°Be' to retain the freshness and crisp natural acidity. Handpicked in the cool of the night to maintain the delicate aromas of these varieties. Whilst fermented separately, post fermentation they were combined for maximum expression of style.

    TASTING NOTES

Fresh aromas of ripe passionfruit complemented by hints of lemon and citrus. Clean, crisp acid creates an excellent balance and a fresh, lingering aftertaste.

    HAAN CLASSIC SHIRAZ CABERNET 2014

Haan Classic Blend Merlot Cabernet Franc should be drunk on the knees with the head bared

    PHILOSOPHY

The Haan philosophy was established right at the beginning with Hanenhof Vineyards being managed as a true wine estate Providing the best possible conditions in both vineyard and winery has been the key to success to which must be added the clear understanding of wine excellence. As such then the Haan Wines show distinct varietal Character and classical style. With the passage of time has come the skill to blend Classic varieties to achieve wines that show strength and grace typical of upper echelon wines.

    VITICULTURE

The Merlot and Cabernet Franc chosen from our vineyard are grown in sandy loam soil on a vertical trellis system with movable foliage wires to expose the fruit to the sun for maximum development of flavour and character.

    WINEMAKING

Both of these varieties are processed separately and after 8 months in wood the individual barrels are selected for this blend. Merlot and Cabernet Franc are plunged 3 times per day in the fermenters to ensure maximum flavour extraction. The ferment temperature is allowed to rise to 28°C, then reduced to 24°C for complexity. Pressing took place after 7 days. The essence of the Classic Blend range is the abundance of fruit flavours. A softer oak regime is used to enhance the character. The blended wine is matured in oak for 12 months before bottling.

    TASTING NOTES

Aromas of cigar box and cedar spice, mulberry and dark berry fruits. Rich black cherry and velvety plums on the palate. Decant for added enjoyment. Whilst created to enjoy now, this wine has the potential to develop further with more bottle age. We expect it to show well around 4–6 years.

HAAN CLASSIC MERLOT CABERNET FRANC 2014

Here is a wine that cries out to be served with a big rare steak, or pork belly, or lamb rump, for total enjoyment

With the passage of time has come the skill to produce wines that show strength and grace typical of upper echelon wines.

    VITICULTURE

The grapes for this Cabernet Franc were grown on the Haan Estate vineyard situated in the heart of the Barossa Valley.

    WINEMAKING

In 2013 these grapes were left to ripen fully and so you can see here a wine of considerable size and flavour. Big, round, soft and very much an individual distinctive style for a Cabernet Franc. Distinctive not just for its size but for all the late vintage plummy characters not usually seen in Cabernet Franc because it is so often picked a lot earlier around 13.5 to 14° Baume.

    TASTING NOTES

As to the taste, this is quite remarkably well balanced in every way, showing a delightful dry tannin finish over the richness of the fruit. Here is a wine that cries out to be served with a big rare steak, or pork belly, or lamb rump, for total enjoyment.

    HAAN CLASSIC CABERNET FRANC 2013

Haan Classic Blend Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon should be drunk on the knees with the head bared

VITICULTURE

The Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon chosen from our vineyard are grown in sandy loam soil on a vertical trellis system with movable foliage wires to expose the fruit to the sun for maximum development of flavour and character. The vines are minimally irrigated and cropped at a level of 2 ½ tonnes per acre (6 tonnes per hectare).

    WINEMAKING

Both of these varieties are processed separately in open fermenters and plunged 3 times per day to ensure maximum flavour extraction. The ferment temperature is allowed to rise to 28°C, then reduced to 24°C for complexity. Pressing took place after 7 days. These wines were then matured in French and American oak. After 8 months the barrels were selected for this range and combined in tank and refilled back into old oak for a further 3 months to allow for the integration of both varieties. The blended wine was not filtered prior to bottling to maintain the maximum amount of fruit flavours.

    TASTING NOTES

The classic Australian red blend. A nose of rich berry fruits with a hint of chocolate. The velvety palate shows red berry fruits, pepper and spice from the Shiraz, while the cabernet gives cedar spice and a hint of mint.

    HAAN RATAFIA VIOGNIER

The MV stands for 'multi vintage" for indeed this wine is made from a number of vintages, some stretching back for more than eight years. Ratafia is the name given in Europe to the pressings which are too full to go with the "free run" juice. In turn it is immediately fortified with spirit and put into wood without fermentation most often, but sometimes with the first touch of ferment. In this case a neutral clean spirit was used to allow the Viognier characters to blossom rather than the spirit. And so it has turned out as promised. As such then we have a non-botrytised dessert wine with glorious flavours. Aged in French oak, the wine has taken up a light golden colour while giving luscious rich flavours of peach and honeysuckle. There is a touch of spiciness which is barely noticeable coming from the oak. Being made from Viognier is very rare indeed and so little of it made.
